City Cricket is born
PCA Media Release - 14 March 2001

Six cities, sixty minutes and a whole new game of cricket!

Cricket will never be the same again when the first City Cricket tournament is played at the County Ground in Bristol on July 10th with some of the country's finest professional and international cricketers on the pitch.

Cricket for the 21st Century, City Cricket is fast, competitive, quick and slick, the brainchild of the Professional Cricketers Association (PCA) and its members which involves Bristol, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Southampton. City Cricket will be played under the Zone 6 banner, details of which will be launched in due course.

In yet another leap forward for cricket by the PCA, Zone 6 City Cricket has taken just six months from idea to completion - and is included in the official ECB calendar. The knock-out tournament promises to be just as time-efficient with whole tournaments taking place over just one day - a huge plus for crowds, TV and sponsors.

"This is a tremendously exciting new venture that is fresh and different; Zone 6 City Cricket will embrace cricketers and sports fans on a nationwide basis. The city format will enable the concept to be adopted by other countries which in turn will lead to an international City Cricket," commented Gladstone Small, PCA project manager.

Darren Gough, currently on tour on Sri Lanka, added: "Zone 6 City Cricket is just what cricket has been waiting for. We need to move with the times and people want action. I can't wait to get stuck in!"

Zone 6 City Cricket will also provide the PCA with a revenue stream for the benevolent fund.
