Dragons successfully defend their one-day title
Dave Sparks - 16 March 2001

The Lancaster Park/Woolston Cricket Club savoured success on Canterbury Cricket Association's finals day played on Hagley on Sunday, March 11.

Defending the one-day title for the third year, once again the Lancaster Park/Woolston second grade Dragons were victorious against High School Old Boys winning by three wickets.

Requiring 155 runs to win LPW Dragon's reached the target with eight overs to spare for the loss of seven wickets.

The Dragons are made up of a combination of players from the former Lancaster Park and Woolston Cricket Clubs, which merged in 1998. Following the merger two Lancaster Park/Woolston teams have been playing in the second grade competition with success.

The Dragons have won the one-day competition each year since the merger and the second team, the Gulls have been well placed each season, finishing second in round robin play this season.

The Dragons were unbeaten in round robin play this season and are in second place in the two-day competition five points adrift of leaders Christchurch East Shirley with two rounds remaining.

The Lancaster Park/Woolston senior women's team that included members of the CricInfo Women's World Cup New Zealand team, Haidee Tiffen and Paula Flannery, cruised home to win the women's final over Marist by 132 runs.

This was the second year in succession that the club's senior women have won the one-day title. After compiling 82 runs with the bat, Haidee Tiffen captured four wickets off eight overs at the cost of 21 runs.

Also among the wickets was 17-year-old Maria Fahey, who had a return of 3-19 off 6.1 overs.

It was a great achievement for the team to continue its winning run without the recently-retired Debbie Hockley. The team has in its ranks several members that played representative cricket this season. In the Canterbury team were: Lisa Astle (captain), Haidee Tiffen, Selena Charteris, Maria Fahey, Paula Flannery and Jo Strachan. Representing Canterbury under-21 were Haidee Tiffen (captain), Selena Charteris, Maria Fahey, Rebecca Steele and Tabetha Waterreus.

The 1998 merger has strengthened the teams with the moulding of players from two clubs which has shown in recent seasons' results.
