Fielding first, we were not at our best and allowed St John's to get to 257/6 by lunchtime, when they declared having faced 67 overs. Stuart Torr (2/28) and Ryan Higgins (2/27) were our most successful bowlers and catches were held - one each by Tristan Holland and Jerry Masaraure, and by Daniel Peens (two), wicket-keeper, who also made a stumping, but three catches which should have been taken were put down… Hold your catches, win your matches! A feature of the St John's innings was the excellent 132 of Sean Durrad.

Our batting performance was encouraging; the opening partnership of Krishna Sivakumaran (48) and Guy Ferreira (10) of 49 for the first wicket got us off to a good start and Stewart Cameron's 82 was masterly - what a shame that he gave his wicket away, caught, again(!), just before time ran out. At the close of play we had collected 181/3 in 50 overs - a good batting performance. The overall pattern of the game provided a good illustration of the theory that, "if you bat properly, you're better batting first, because then you control the game".

UNDER 14 CRICKET V. LOMAGUNDI COLLEGE
SATURDAY, 20TH JANUARY 2001, GANLEY (home)

Early morning rain delayed the start of the match until 10:30 a.m. and losing the toss meant that we were asked to bat first on a slowish pitch. Two early wickets fell, bringing together Stewart Cameron and Ryan Higgins who each registered half-centuries; Stuart Torr (37 not out) and Stephen Fuller (12 not out) both made useful contributions to lift our total to 173/4 by the declaration, five overs after lunch, by which time we had faced 39 overs.

We bowled generally good line and length and fielded well to dismiss Lomagundi for 89 in 35 overs with about half-an-hour plus the compulsory minimum 20 overs in the last hour to spare. Krishna Sivakumaran was our most successful bowler with 4/23 in 8 overs - well done!

SAINTS WON BY 84 RUNS

UNDER 14 CRICKET V. EAGLESVALE
SATURDAY, 20TH JANUARY 2001, AWAY

Play began on schedule at 9:00 a.m. and with "Saints" batting first on a fairly interesting pitch and with a rather slow outfield; we showed a tendency to try for boundaries which is to be applauded on account of the positive attitude it demonstrates... Perhaps at this stage of the season and the year we might do well to consider occupation of the crease at least as important; of the sixteen wickets we lost during the game, eight were "bowled"! Our top-scorer in the match was Krishna Sivakumaran whose 9 in the first innings added to 42 in the second gave him an aggregate of 51 for the day - well done. When our first innings closed, 59 from the bat plus 30 extras gave Eaglesvale a pretty readily attainable target of 90 runs to take a first-innings lead.

Stuart Torr (7/20), however, had other ideas and Eaglesvale were dismissed for 74 just 9 balls after lunch. Batting again, we took our second innings total to 81/4, a lead of 96 before declaring with the final 20 overs still to play. Eaglesvale accumulated 69 whilst we took eight of their second innings wickets, with Tristan Holland (5/27), this time the chief destroyer.

Altogether this was a very good beginning to the year.
