Thailand: League semi-finalists decided; Bangkok Sixes attracts 24 teams
21 March 2001

Elite CC and Young Thai Sikhs remain in the hunt for dual trophies this season following their qualification for the semi-finals of both the Thai Cricket Association's 50 and 25 over leagues.

The two will be joined in the 50 over league semi-finals by Royal Bangkok Sports Club and United Indian CC, while Jogani and Safari CCs are the other teams in the 25 over league semi-finals.

Seven teams comprised the 50 over league this season, played on the natural grass wickets of the Royal Bangkok Sports CLub and Polo Club grounds - the teams missing the finals being the British Club, Southerners CC and Indian CC.

Indian CC, Thai Indian Sports Club, Thai Punjab CC and United Indian CC were the remaining teams in the 25 over league, played at the artificial turf wickets of the Polo Club and Asian Institute grounds.

There have been some outstanding performers this season in both leagues including:

  • 16-year-old Papua New Guinean all-rounder Doug Edward
  • Batsman Andrew Perser
  • Leg spinner Arif Ansari
  • Pinch hitter Rahul Sachdeva
  • Left arm off spinner Doug Kinsella
  • Left arm medium pacer Graham Pitty
  • Right arm pace bowler Zeeshan Khan
  • Opening batsman Kashif Ansari
  • Right arm off-spinner Pradeep Gulati

While there are no players of Thai ancestry playing in the league at the moment, a Thai 'national' team is expected to compete in the under 13 version of the Tuanku Ja'Afar Trophy in Malaysia next month.

Meanwhile, the 17th Bangkok Sixes will take place from March 29-April 1, attracting 24 teams from around the world.

Former Test and One Day International players are expected to join current First Class stars in outfits from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, the United States as well as eight Thai based combinations.
