Matabeleland cricket report
Derrick Townshend - 23 March 2001

Matabeleland shows one change in the team to play the Logan Cup leaders Mashonaland in Harare this weekend. National captain Heath Streak makes a welcome return. He will replace the out-of-form Neil van Rensburg who has only scored 48 runs in five innings at an average of 9.60.

Streak's inclusion will bolster both the batting and bowling of the side, particularly in the former department. Apart from promising Mark Vermeulen (295 runs, average 59.00) and Mluleki Nkala (116 runs at 58.00), the other batsmen have struggled in the three-day game. The batting has been disappointing with only three players scoring over 100 runs in three matches.

Matabeleland's strength continues to be in bowling where young Ian Engelbrecht is the leading wicket-taker in the competition with 14 wickets at 16.14 and an economy rate of 3.08. Despite persistent performances over the past few seasons, he still does not receive the recognition he deserves and he must wonder what more is required to gain a regular place in the Zimbabwe A side.

Surprisingly, Mark Vermeulen, who is having great season, also leads the bowling averages with four wickets at 11.80. Mashonaland will be the strongest opposition Matabeleland will face in this year's competition and weather permitting should be an interesting encounter at Harare Sports Club. There is a possibility that Henry Olonga may be passed fit this week which will enable him to be available for the final fixture against the CFX Academy. This would give the fast bowler a chance to regain some form prior to the arrival of Bangladesh at the beginning of April.

The CFX Academy match will now be played at Queens Sports Club over the weekend 30 and 31 March and 1 April. It was originally scheduled to be played at BAC.
