Sui Gas and PWD clash in four-day Final of Patron’s Trophy Grade II
Mahmood Ahmad - 26 March 2001

Pakistan Public Works Department won an emphatic victory in the last round of the Patron's Trophy (Grade II) tournament to edge past Pakistan Army in the point's table, reaching the final of the competition, where they meet Sui Gas, the winner of the round robin league with an aggregate of 41 points, in the four-day encounter.

Pakistan Army (26 points) were at number two position until the start of the last round. They had already played their six matches before the start of the sixth round, owing to the fact that there were only seven teams competing in the tournament.

Pakistan Public Works Department (PPWD), with 21 points against their name and five points shy of the Army, badly needed a win in their last match of the round robin league, which they did in style thrashing Pakistan University Grants Commission (PUGC) by an innings and 29 runs.

This was PWD's second victory in the seven-team tournament, without facing a defeat. Pakistan Army, on the other hand, has two wins and one loss to their credit.

In another match of the tournament, Service Industries beat Pakistan Education Board (PEB) by nine wickets to come fourth in the teams' standings. They have 23 points to their credit with the help of two wins and four draws from six matches.

PEB, on the other hand, face the ignominy of standing last in the overall rankings, as they finish the round robin league with negative points, -4 to be exact. They failed to win a single match, drawing one and incurring five losses.

In the third and the last match of this round, Pakistan Air Force salvaged some of their pride by drawing their last encounter against Sui Gas, the leaders of the round robin league. However, they failed to add to their tally, thus, finishing the round with just 7 points.

PEB and PAF now face elimination in the next year's tournament.

The final of the competition will start from the 28th of March. This four-day match will be played at the Lahore Cricket Association Ground, Lahore.
