Canterbury Secondary Schools XI lose in close encounter

A Canterbury Secondary Schools XI lost to the Auckland Schools team by 3 wickets in a match held at St Andrews College yesterday.

The undoubted highlight of the days play was a fine century from Willie Bellis who scored 103. He was ably supported by Neil Broom (CBHS) who scored 56 n.o. Due largely to these efforts Canterbury Schools totaled 200/2 from 45 overs.

In reply Auckland were able to reach this total with seven wickets down and eight balls remaining. Top score for Auckland was M. Metcalfe with 70. The best of the Canterbury bowlers was James Baxendale with 3-38.

Commenting on the match Canterbury Cricket Operations Manager Trudy Anderson said that the standard of play was pleasing. She also said that it was good to be able to play the Auckland XI and gauge the respective standards.
