PUNE, India - Indian all-rounder Virender Shewag has been ruled out of the rest of the one-day series against Australia with a thumb injury.

"He has fractured his thumb. It needs an operation," Jaywant Lele, Secretary of India's Board of Control for Cricket, said today on the eve of the second match of the five-game series.

Left-hander Yuvraj Singh will replace Shewag in the 14-strong squad but is currently in Dhaka and is expected to join them for the third game of the series in the central Indian city of Indore on Saturday, Lele said.

Shewag, 22, injured his right thumb when fielding in the first game on Sunday in Bangalore, where he was named man-of-the-match after hitting a breezy 58 and taking 3-59 with his off-spinners to help India to a 60-run victory.

Yuvraj Singh was left out of the original squad because of poor batting form.
