Burnside High School win crucial Cup match
Canterbury Cricket Association - 28 March 2001

Burnside High School defeated Timaru Girls High School in today's crucial, Yoplait Cup, qualifier played at Hagley Park.

Timaru Girls High School have been the dominant force in girls secondary school cricket in recent years and have produced a steady stream of high quality cricketers including White Ferns star, Haidee Tiffen.

In today's game Burnside batted first and totaled 188/5 from 40 overs. No batsman stood out but there were consistent performances from Lisa Brown 39, Sarah Couglan 39 and Melissa Goodall 32 not out. The best bowlers for Timaru were Marie Fahey 2/27 and Melissa Cormick 2/44.

Despite an outstanding innings of 110 not out from Canterbury Under 21 representative, Maria Fahey, the Timaru team were not able to reach the target being 162/7 at the close.

Burnside's bowling was accurate and was backed by excellent ground fielding. Best of the bowlers was Frances Clarke with 2/33.

Burnside's victory means that it will go through to the finals of the Yoplait Cup.

This match was played in conjunction with the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament organized by the Canterbury Cricket Association.
