Sharjah provides cash incentive for next tier of New Zealand players
Lynn McConnell - 30 March 2001

New Zealand's cricketers are in for an end of season bonus of $NZ545,013 after the acceptance of an invitation to play in the Coca-Cola Cup tournament at Sharjah from April 8-20.

The team is getting a guaranteed minimum $US200,000 for playing in Sharjah with the lowest placed team of Pakistan, Sri Lanka or New Zealand winning $US20,000, second-place taking $US30,000 and the winning team taking $US50,000.

The team will not be a first-string New Zealand team as several have long-term injuries, such as Chris Cairns, Daniel Vettori, Dion Nash and Shayne O'Connor being out for most of the summer, and Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle, Adam Parore and Chris Martin likely to be rested after busy seasons.

Fleming is also taking up a contract with Middlesex in English county cricket.

Outgoing New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive Christopher Doig said the board of NZC viewed the tournament as a positive opportunity to develop the group of younger players who have represented New Zealand this summer.

"The selectors have been asked to name a side which will expand the pool of international experience. It will also be an opportunity for the selectors to observe less experienced players in conditions similar to those which will be met during the July one-day series in Sri Lanka," he said.

The side is to be named within 24 hours of the end of the final Test against Pakistan in Hamilton.
