Lancashire lose their first match on tour
John Dawson - 31 March 2001

Lancashire suffered their first defeat of the South African tour at the hands of arch enemies Yorkshire at Newlands despite a battling innings from Joe Scuderi.

Yorkshire opted to bat first, and for the first 20 overs the Lancashire bowlers contained them well only allowing on average two runs an over but only took one wicket in the process. This allowed Yorkshire the safety of being able to really attack the bowlers in the latter part of the innings. Gavin Hamilton was the second wickets to go down, thanks to a great piece of fielding from Chris Schofield, being run out for 50.

Anthony McGrath and Vic Craven then dispatched the Lancashire attack to all parts of the ground in the last 10 overs to set up a tony McGrath made 104 at a run a ball and Craven remained unbeaten for a whirlwind 40.

Lancashire got of to the worst possible start, losing Chilton and Roberts early. Neil Fairbrother who has got Lancashire out of a mess many times before started to go after the inexperienced Yorkshire attack, missing the likes of Gough, White, Silverwood, Hoggard, Hutchison and Sidebottom.

After reaching 20 Fairbrother attempted to hit young spinner, Dawson out of the ground but miscued the shot to be caught out near the mid off boundary. Graham Lloyd then suffered the misfortune of the ball spinning back on to his stumps after he had hit a delivery straight into the ground. Warren Hegg followed soon after and when Ryan Driver was out for a determhan 60 runs on the board. Joe Scuderi facing a near impossible task, batted sensibly with the lower order and tail end to give the score a bit of respectability.

Requiring close to 9 runs per over Scuderi was stumped for 56 ending any hopes of a close finish. Some useful boundaries from Chapple and Yates gave a faint glimmer of hope but with just a couple of overs remaining Peter Martin was bowled by Gavin Hamilton and Lancashire were all out for 184.
