Double century for Sinclair in first league outing
Lynn McConnell - 7 May 2001

New Zealand Test batsman Mathew Sinclair marked his entrance into the Yorkshire league at the weekend when scoring a double century for his Cleethorpes club.

Sinclair was 200 not out when his side had first use of the wicket against Sheffield United at the Bawtry Road wicket.

Cleethorpes were 304/3 at the end of the innings and Sinclair became one of only four players in the league's history to have made a double century. He was 31 runs short of the all-time league record set by Sheffield United's Shaun Beck two years ago in a 60-over game.

Sheffield had no answer to the batting onslaught which was aided by Mike Smith's 41 and James Stevenson's 46.

Then in the field, the teenage left-arm spinner Nick White reduced Sheffield to 70/8 before a lower order rally saw the side through to 145.

White took 5-21.

The side was set to play another game today, on a Bank Holiday in England, while it faces Shefffield Collegiate next Saturday.

It is a great start for the lowly-ranked Cleethorpes club which is looking to make a significant run at the league title this summer.
