Southern Electric Premier League Divs 2 and 3 - Week 1 Report
Mike Vimpany - 7 May 2001

New look Lymington, parading five fresh faces, ran amok against newly promoted Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 rivals, Old Basing, piling up a massive 268-8 before celebrating a thumping 165-run victory.

Neil Trestrail and Ben Craft each hit half-centuries and late call-up Wayne Smith, the former Esso (Fawley) off-spinner, grabbed five wickets.

Australian import Brian Clemow, a prolific run scorer for Manley and Mosman in the Sydney Grades, announced his arrival on the SPL scene in some style.

He hit two sixes and two fours in his first 20 runs. To Old Basing's relief, he was out at 51-1 for 33.

Ian Young (31), another newcomer from nearby Hyde, was effective but less spectacular, providing an ideal platform for third-wicket pairTrestrail (60) and Craft (58) to add 94.

A no-nonsense 25 from Dave Griffiths carried Lymington towards an unassailable 268-8.

Australian pair Sam Miller and Lee Sorfleet piloted Old Basing's Premier Division 3 title push last summer.

But with the duo now plying their trade elsewhere, Old Basing are relatively weak - and so it proved, with only skipper Del Summers (39) holding his own.

Trevor Phillips (3-15) had Old Basing wobbling at 19-4 before Smith's enigmatic off-spin brought a flattering 5-21 reward - the Basingstoke club lurching to 103 all out and a massive defeat.

Left-arm spinner Nick Wood, so often the scurge of batsmen early in the season, collected a nap hand of victims as Old Tauntonians & Romsey won by 47 runs at Hambledon.

Wood took 5-32 as Hambledon were dismissed for 146, after O.Ts had made 193 all out.

O.Ts thrived on an 84-run start between Charles Forward (43) and Neil Stothart (36), but a four-wicket return spell by Gary Shotton (4-51) and a typically effective left-arm stint by former Hampshire spinner Ian Turner (3-28) checked their progress.

Reg Norris (39) led Hambledon to 57-1, but the middle-order gave way in alarming fashion - Wood the predominant cause for six wickets to tumble for 16 runs.

Last pair John Burdekin (28) and Chris de Mellow (19 not out) added 36, but Hambledon's prospects had long ended.

Julian Ballinger produced a career-best bowling performance in his first game at the helm for Alton, taking 7-19 in the eventual three-wicket win over Waterlooville at the Jubilee Fields.

Ville were progressing steadily at 60-2 through Australian Chris Baumann (27) and Martin Shephard (20) before Ballinger's off-spin changed the course of the game.

The head-shaven Alton skipper spun out seven Ville batsmen - the visitors' total plummeting from 99-3 to 106 all out ... seven wickets for just seven runs !

Veteran Barbadian Stan Rudder, a remarkably fit 67 years of age, ripped out Alton's top three, but was unable to remove Michael Heffernan, whose 33 not out edged the North Hampshire club to 107-7 and a nervy three-wicket success. The other Premier Division 3 matches produced wins for Bashley (Rydal) II against fancied Gosport Borough, and Portsmouth II over United Services II.
