Sinclair innings wins rave reviews
Lynn McConnell - 15 May 2001

Mathew Sinclair's innings of 199 not out in the Yorkshire League at the weekend has been described as one of the finest innings ever seen in the League.

A report published in the Grimsby Telegraph said: "Despite Cleethorpes first defeat of the season at the hands of reigning champions Sheffield Collegiate, the talk amongst the home followers was that they had witnessed the finest game of cricket ever seen on Chichester Road."

Five hundred and eighty-five runs were scored for the loss of 10 wickets.

"Cleethorpes were asked to bat first by the visitors and another century opening partnership followed between Mike Smith and Mathew Sinclair before the former was dismissed for 52.

"What then followed will live long in the memory of all Cleethorpes supporters and others privileged to be at the ground.

"Mathew Sinclair produced one of the finest innings the Yorkshire League has ever seen as he made an astonishing 199 not out. His knock came off only 180 balls and contained 18 fours and an amazing 11 sixes.

"Many residents in Daggett Road were forced to take cover in their gardens as the Kiwi unleashed a fearsome assault on the bowling and he moved from 149 to 199 in only 18 balls.

"With minor contributions from the other Meggies batsmen, who were happy to just marvel at his talent, the final score rose to 292/4 at the close of innings. John Hespe was Sheffield's most successful bowler with 3-105 off 22 overs."

However, the nature of league cricket was demonstrated as Sheffield Collegiate went about chasing the target.

"Collegiate, unfazed by the massive task facing them, proceeded to construct a perfectly paced innings with the highlights being a century from ex-Middlesex and Yorkshire batsman Richard Kettleborough and 96 from Devon opener Nick Gaywood," the Telegraph reported.

"Cleethorpes battled hard and the game was still in the balance with six needed off the final over, but when Pineo struck Andrew Carrington's fourth delivery to the boundary, the Sheffield players and supporters went wild with delight as they realised they had pulled off one of the great wins in the leagues history. Carrington bowled a marathon spell of 19.4 overs for a return of 2-94 and Stuart Airey claimed 2-38 off 11 overs."
