Marsh guides Leicestershire to last-over victory
20 May 2001

Leicestershire's powerful Australian all-rounder Danny Marsh rescued his side from a precarious 19-2 to steer them to a last-over victory against Surrey at The Oval in the Norwich Union League.

He hit an unbeaten 97 to take Leicestershire past Surrey's 230-4 and complete a four-wicket victory, their second consecutive Sunday success.

Marsh's innings included nine fours and a six and was based around strong driving to both sides of the wicket. Darren Maddy ably supported him with a quickfire 46 off 47 balls before he was trapped lbw by Adam Hollioake.

It was a far cry from Leicestershire's poor start to their innings which at one stage saw Alex Tudor boast bowling figures of two for two off four overs.

However, Surrey failed to capitalise with Ed Giddins sending down a wayward spell and Gary Butcher bowling three costly overs.

Earlier Ali Brown had batted throughout Surrey's innings for an unbeaten 111. His fifth-wicket partnership with Ben Hollioake was worth 127 and rescued his side from a poor start.

They had lost three early wickets to Scott Boswell, with Mark Butcher, Mark Ramprakash and Nadeem Shahib all failing. But Brown remained and was able to repair some of the damage when he was joined by Adam Hollioake.

Later Ben Hollioake offered good support to reach 64 not out from just 56 balls but their effort could not prevent Surrey suffering a second successive one-day defeat at The Oval.
