Combined release from the Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA) & International Cricket Council (ICC) East Asia - Pacific Development Region
21 May 2001

The above organisations are delighted to today announce that Pierre Chillia has been appointed as the first-ever Development Officer (part-time) for the Vanuatu Cricket Association.

Pierre, 32, the Vanuatu National XI Captain at the recent ICC Pacifica Cricket Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, will be responsible for driving the implementation of the VCA's development programs in relation to all of schools and club cricket at both junior and senior levels.

This appointment, to start immediately, has been made possible via the assistance of the ICC Development Program which has formed a strong partnership with Vanuatu cricket, an ICC Affiliate Member. This partnership has also seen major direct support provided to Vanuatu in the following areas in just the past two months:

  • The March visit of ICC Country Development Officer, Bruce Nunn (from the Victorian Cricket Association in Australia) to conduct coach education courses and junior cricket clinics
  • Funding for a cricket ground/concrete pitch development at Onesua High School
  • Funding for a ride-on lawn mower for maintenance of the grounds at Independence Park
  • The provision of seven (7) junior cricket kits for the VCA's schools program.

ICC East Asia – Pacific Development Manager, Matthew Kennedy, said "There are many hard-working volunteer officials and players in Vanuatu who have done a fantastic job to grow the sport in that country. However, it was seen as time that some additional manpower support was provided to these people so that more development initiatives can be undertaken amongst this enthusiastic and expanding cricket community. Pierre's appointment is sure to be a boost for the sport.

"The support levels recently provided to Vanuatu from the ICC Development Program are quite significant and we are confident that these initiatives will provide long-term benefits. The VCA should be congratulated for its pro- activity," he added.

VCA President, Mark Stafford, said "This is an exciting time for Vanuatu cricket. With many major projects and activities leading up to and throughout the 2001 season which has just got under way, we are now in a position to really build upon our current status and progress even further.

"We are delighted to have appointed someone of Pierre's calibre to fulfil the Development Officer role," he concluded.
