Hampshire's Kenway and Kendall make Derby pay
Nigel Gardner - 25 May 2001

Derbyshire's decision to put Hampshire into bat backfired as Derek Kenway and Will Kendall hit half-centuries.

Despite including two spinners, the home side chose to bowl first and although Graeme Welch made an early breakthrough, the rest of the morning was dominated by the batsmen.

Perhaps early cloud cover influenced Tim Munton, but there was little sign of any swing as Kenway and Kendall shared an unbroken century stand.

Giles White was the only Hampshire casualty when he tried to leave a ball from Welch but deflected it into his stumps in the third over.

That was Derbyshire's last success of the session as they paid the price for bowling too wide, allowing the batsmen to drive and cut.

Kenway was first to his 50 which came from 89 balls although he survived a dropped catch on 51 when Karl Krikkken failed to hang onto an edge off seamer Tom Lungley diving low to his right.

Kendall reached his half-century in the last over of the morning and at lunch, Hampshire were 116-1 from 32 overs.
