Walker and Saggers star for Kent
Richard Thomas of the South Wales Evening Post - 25 May 2001

Matthew Walker and Martin Saggers were the notable performers as Kent took the initiative on the first day of their CricInfo Championship match with Glamorgan at Swansea.

Walker's second century of the season was the backbone of Kent's 252 all out and then Saggers returned figures of 7-2-15-4 to have Glamorgan struggling at 34-4 before the close, dismissing the top order of Steve James, Mike Powell, Jimmy Maher and Matthew Maynard.

Walker had come to the wicket with Kent in real trouble at 13-3 after Glamorgan's new ball attack had run riot sending Robert Key, Ed Smith and Darryl Cullinan back to pavilion in quick succession.

And Walker and David Fulton then shared a 149-run partnership for the fourth wicket either side of lunch, backing up Matthew Fleming's decision to bat first.

The stubborn partnership was broken by Alex Wharf who trapped David Fulton lbw and followed that up by bowling Paul Nixon with a yorker.

That and Dean Cosker's dismissal of Mark Ealham put Glamorgan back in the hunt but they couldn't stop Walker going to three figures.

Glamorgan were hampered by the loss of off-spinner Robert Croft who injured his right shoulder in the field. But that did not worry Cosker who took three of the last four wickets to fall for the addition of just four runs.

Min Patel, Saggers and Ben Trott all went cheaply as Cosker finished with figures of 4-48. It left Walker stranded on 112, an innings that included 13 fours off 242 balls.

In reply Glamorgan finished the day on 42-4, still needing a further 61 to avoid the follow-on.
