Vaughan stands firm against Northampton
David Warner - 25 May 2001

Michael Vaughan, chosen by England for the forthcoming one-day international series, batted throughout the morning at Headingley today after Northamptonshire had inserted Yorkshire in the CricInfo Championship match.

Vaughan, who made a brilliant unbeaten 125 in Yorkshire's Benson and Hedges Cup quarter-final triumph over Somerset on Wednesday, was 43 not out at the interval when Yorkshire were 75 for one in 36 overs, the batsman out being Scott Richardson.

In a surprise late change, Yorkshire called up Craig White from the Second XI game against Worcestershire Seconds to replace Australian Darren Lehmann who was suffering from a pinched nerve in his neck.

White, who has been told by England not to bowl until his back problem is cured, returned to batting form with the Seconds yesterday by blasting an unbeaten 82.

Northants also made a last-minute change to their line-up with off-spinner Graeme Swann being pulled out of the second team match with Essex at Saffron Walden after reporting a recovery from his shoulder injury. He came in to deny paceman Lesroy Weekes a Championship debut.

Richardson and Vaughan put on 38 for the first wicket without too much difficulty before Richardson turned Tony Penberthy to Graeme Swann at square leg.

Vaughan occasionally pierced the field with some well placed shots but generally adopted a careful approach and at lunch he and Matthew Wood had added 37 for the second wicket.
