Warwickshire drill Sussex in Hove, again
Bruce Talbot - 28 May 2001

Warwickshire wrapped up their second Cricinfo Championship victory of the season to maintain their excellent record against Sussex.

Their eight wicket win means they have now won on their last five visits to Hove although they were delayed until 45 minutes after lunch before extending that impressive sequence.

Sussex were bowled out for 253 in their second innings and Warwickshire had knocked off 37 of their target of 67 when off-spinner Mark Davis struck in three balls.

Michael Powell was caught on the square leg boundary off a top-edged sweep and then Nick Knight, in his last innings before the second Test, offered no shot and was bowled by a delivery which didn't turn as he'd expected.

Mark Wagh and David Hemp ensured there were no further alarms for the visitors who, on this evidence, look capable of justifying their position as favourites for promotion from Division Two.

Earlier Richard Montgomerie scored his 14th first-class hundred, but first of this season, before Sussex were bowled out for 253.

Montgomerie made 116 in a shade over five and a half hours off 227 balls with 15 boundaries before he was bowled trying to guide Neil Smith's off spin through slip.

Smith finished with 4-76 after winning a fortunate lbw verdict against Matt Prior who had made 35 before he perished trying to sweep a full length delivery which appeared to be drifting down the leg side.

Fellow off-spinner Wagh, complete with re-modelled action, removed Davis and Kirtley to finish with a career-best 3-29.
