Surprises aplenty in first round of SEC Cup
Mike Vimpany - 29 May 2001

Much fancied Portsmouth have been bundled out of the newly sponsored Southern Electric Contracting Knockout Cup at the first round hurdle.

Former Hampshire all-rounder Lee Savident hit 47, but failed to save Raj Maru's side from an unexpected eight-run defeat by neighbours United Services at Burnaby Road.

US posted 169-4 and then pegged powerful Portsmouth to 161-8, with James Milne snapping up three wickets.

Australian schoolteacher Shane Merkel hit an undefeated 83 as Flamingos upset Sparsholt, last season's semi-finalists, by eight wickets.

Shaun Green cracked 80 not out as Easton & Martyr Worthy put out local rivals St Cross Symondians.

Calmore's dismal record in the SPL knockout goes on - Paultons seeing off Tom Pegler's side by seven wickets at Whitemoor Lane.
