Dawn A senior cricketer earns Rs 147,000 per one-dayer
31 May 2001

The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Lt Gen Tauqir Zia Wednesday revealed a senior player was earning Rs147,000 from a one- day international. He added that if a player was earning that much money, he should not have the temptation to fall to the greed of betting and match-fixing.

"One (senior) player gets Rs147,000 from a single one-day international. And if he played 50 one-dayers in a year, the simple calculation is that he will pocket Rs7.5million. "I don't think after earning that much, there should be any temptation to fall for more (through illegal means)," Zia said during a `News Morning' programme on the PTV. Asked if the players were to mint money because of uncertainty of their futures, he replied that the argument didn't apply on players like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul-Haq who have been playing active cricket for the last 10-15 years.

Zia didn't say it clearly, but passed on the message between the lines that if a player was earning that much, it would be asking for too much from him to retire from the sport. However, he did say after being paid that much, the nation expected a better performance from them.

"If a seasoned player like Wasim Akram is bowling 15-17 wides, it would be unfair to ask a player like him, if he is not doing it deliberately, to explain such bowling. "But we have an analysis wing at the PCB which corrects the technique of younger players," Zia said.

He, nevertheless, stated that most of the Pakistan players had not submitted their tax returns while adding that the assets of the players abroad were difficult to assess and find. "They have not submitted details of their assets because of though international commitments," Zia said.
