India's preparations for Saturday's first Test against South Africa, which starts tomorrow, were thrown into turmoil by late injury fears over offspinner Harbhajan Singh and left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra.

A decision on the fitness of both players will only be taken tomorrow morning, shortly before the start of the match, said India's physiotherapist Andrew Leipus.

Nehra, who has not yet played on tour after India's only first-class warm-up match was washed out in Durban this week, fell badly on his left foot and twisted an ankle during nets on Friday. Harbhajan is suffering from a groin infection which also makes him a serious doubt.

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly also appeared to pour cold water on reports that left-hand opener Connor Williams would make his debut at the top of the order against the South Africans. Williams was hotly tipped to partner Shiv Sunder Das at Bloemfontein, but Ganguly thought it unlikely he would be given his first cap. "He simply hasn't had enough time out in the middle on tour yet," Ganguly said when asked if Williams featured in India's plans.

Should Williams not make the side, the experienced Rahul Dravid is expected to open the innings, with 23-year-old batsman Virender Sehwag winning his first Test cap in the middle order.
