MELBOURNE (Reuters)
Darren Lehmann smashed 246 from 238 balls as he shared a South Australia record partnership for the second wicket of 386 in 295 minutes with Greg Blewett against Tasmania at Hobart.

Lehmann and Blewett resumed on 31 and 45 respectively on Saturday morning with South Australia 108 for 1 after Tasmania had declared at 382 for 7.

With only Sunday's play remaining in the Pura Cup four-day match, South Australia were 589 for 5 and captain Lehmann left open the possibility of Tasmania batting on further on Sunday.

Lehmann hit 39 fours and four sixes while Blewett scored 163 from 279 balls with 20 fours and one six.

Their partnership took the score from 63 for 1 to 449 for 2 before Lehmann was caught by David Saker off the bowling of Damien Wright.

The previous South Australia second-wicket partnership record was 308 by Barry Richards and Ian Chappell against Western Australia at Perth in 1970-71.

Lehmann gave chances on 52 and 166. One of Yorkshire's heroes this year as they won their first English County Championship for 33 years, he has played five Tests for Australia and hit the winning runs in the 1999 World Cup final against Pakistan at Lord's.

In Melbourne, Victoria trail New South Wales by 10 runs with six second-innings wickets in hand and one day's play remaining in their four-day match.

New South Wales were all out for 338 on Saturday, a first-innings lead of 79, after centuries from Michael Bevan (128) and Michael Clarke (111).

Victoria fast bowler Mathew Inness took four wickets before the home side struggled with the bat again, scoring 69 for 4 by the close of play after more than two hours of cricket were lost because of rain.

Brad Hodge (26) was the first of three Victoria batsmen to be dismissed with the score on 47 but allrounder Ian Harvey remained not out on 12 after top-scoring with 74 in the first innings.

Victoria captain Matthew Elliott, who did not field because of illness, is expected to bat on Sunday, weather permitting.
