Steven Lynch on the statistical highlights from Galle
Saturday, November 17, 2001

  • Muttiah Muralitharan took the 29th and 30th five-wicket hauls of his Test career. His figures of 11 for 170 were also the eighth time he has taken 10 or more in a match.

  • Mahela Jayawardene became the 11th person to be run out for 99 in Tests, and the first since Mike Atherton was left on his knees mid-pitch against Australia at Lord's in 1993. The full list is:
    Bill Brown (AvI, Melbourne, 1947-48)
    Arthur Morris (AvSA, Melbourne, 1952-53)
John Beck (NZvSA, Cape Town, 1953-54)
    Rohan Kanhai (WIvI, Madras, 1958-59)
    Motganhalli Jaisimha (IvP, Kanpur, 1960-61)
    Mike Smith (EvP, Lahore, 1961-62)
    Mushtaq Mohammad (PvE, Karachi, 1972-73)
    Graham Gooch (EvA, Melbourne, 1979-80)
    Dipak Patel (NZvE, Christchurch, 1991-92)
    Mike Atherton (EvA, Lord's, 1993)
    Mahela Jayawardene (SLvWI, Galle, 2001-02).
Of these, Beck and Patel are the only two who never made a Test hundred.

  • Sri Lanka made 590 for 9 declared, more than doubling their previous-highest score against West Indies. That was 233 for 8, made at Arnos Vale in 1996-97. It is also the highest total in West Indies-Sri Lanka Tests (previously 440, made by West Indies in the first innings of this match). This is the fourth Test between the sides.

  • Hashan Tillekeratne and Thilan Samaraweera put on 154, a record for Sri Lanka's sixth wicket in Tests against West Indies. Their previous highest was a mere 35, by Tillekeratne and Romesh Kaluwitharana in the first Test in Antigua in 1996-97. It is also the highest sixth-wicket partnership in Tests at Galle. The previous-highest was 106, added by Younis Khan and Abdur Razzaq for Pakistan in the second Test in 1999-2000

  • Kumar Sangakkara made his second Test hundred, in his 14th match. The other one also came at Galle, 105 not out v India earlier this year. Sangakkara is the first Sri Lankan to score a Test century against West Indies.

  • Sangakkara and Jayawardene produced the highest third-wicket partnership for either side in Tests between the two countries, surpassing the previous mark of 160 set by West Indies openers Sherwin Campbell and Stuart Williams at Antigua in 1996-97

  • Brian Lara and Carl Hooper added 153 for the fourth wicket, a record for West Indies against Sri Lanka. The previous record (97) was also set by Lara and Hooper at Kingstown in St Vincent in 1996-97.

  • Brian Lara hit his 16th Test century, in his 81st Test. It was his second against Sri Lanka, and his first since his 182 against Australia at Adelaide in Dec 2000, since when he has recorded scores of 83, 91 and 81 (all against South Africa). Lara also scored 115 against Sri Lanka at Kingstown in 1996-97.

  • Ramnaresh Sarwan passed 80 for the fourth time in Tests – but his highest score remains 91, against South Africa at Georgetown in 2000-01.

  • Lara and Sarwan put on 140, the highest for West Indies' third wicket against Sri Lanka. The previous record was 51, by Lara and Floyd Reifer at Kingstown in 1996-97. The second-wicket stand of 80 between Lara and Daren Ganga was also a record for this series, beating the 54 of Sherwin Campbell and Floyd Reifer at St John's in 1996-97.

  • This was Sri Lanka's first win over West Indies in only their fourth game against them. West Indies have won one, and there have been two draws, including the only previous match in Sri Lanka, a rain-ruined match at Moratuwa in 1993-94.
