As a teenager, Shane Bond was capable of bowling at more than 80mph, and in 1999 he broke a 70-year-old record by taking 118 wickets for Furness in the Northern Lancashire League. But by this time he had already suffered three stress fractures of the back in four years, and to ensure his financial security he took a year out of cricket to become a policeman. He returned faster, stronger and more mature, and from being a middling third seamer for Canterbury, he had become the quickest bowler in New Zealand and a genuine Test prospect. He starred on the New Zealand A tour of India, taking seven wickets on a lifeless track against Indian Railways, and within weeks of taking 7 for 55 for the New Zealand academy against the Australian one, he was called into the senior squad in November 2001 as a replacement for the injured Dion Nash, making his debut at Adelaide. But it was later that winter that people really started to take notice. With 21 wickets, including a career-best 5 for 25 against Australia at Adelaide, he was named Man of the Series in the VB one-day tournament. Andrew Miller
