Plenty of sweat as England net
Wisden CricInfo staff - November 16, 2001

David Lloyd would be proud of a Nasser Hussain net session - it has Team England written all over it. Dean Conway kneads his way through mangled bodies on his physio's trestle table in the middle of the ground, the physiologist Nigel Stockhill directs the exercise drills and Duncan Fletcher alternates between studying the bowlers, hands on hips, legs astride like a gunslinger, and leaning on the nets, chewing earnestly at a piece of straw, with eyes only for the batsmen.

And then there are the players. In the second net session of the tour at the Wankhede Stadium, there was plenty of sweat flying around - the humidity makes it harder to acclimatise than on October's tour to Zimbabwe. Both Richard Johnson and Matthew Hoggard had particularly long bowls in the stifling heat.

But ball of the day went to Craig White, who sent Michael Vaughan's off stump tumbling out of the ground with a rapid offcutter. Changing from helmet to floppy hat and from net to outfield, Vaughan then repeatedly practised his sweep against throwdowns from Warren Hegg - a stroke that Fletcher encouraged in Zimbabwe to keep the score ticking on slow pitches.

Tanya Aldred, our assistant editor, is covering the whole England tour for Wisden.com.
