Donald back for Oz
Wisden CricInfo staff - November 23, 2001

CENTURION, South Africa (Reuters)
Fast bowler Allan Donald has been included in the South African squad to tour Australia next month.

Donald, South Africa's most prolific Test wicket-taker with 325, has overcome illness and injuries to be named among the 15 players who will leave on December 1 to contest three Tests and a one-day series.

"Allan has had a fitness test this week, he's bowled in the nets and he's fine," selection convenor Rushdi Magiet told reporters.

Steve Elworthy, the 36-year-old fast bowler who has taken 31 wickets at an average of 14 in domestic cricket this season, was also named in the squad.

"We were concerned with our penetration, and with Allan and Steve around, we've got options," Magiet said. "Steve has been in tremendous form, and we felt we needed to reward him. We wanted to take Allan, for his experience and because he is a great motivator in the side. Elworthy is the form bowler."

Batsman Daryll Cullinan, a veteran of 70 Test matches, did not make the side. "We deliberated long on Daryll - he deserved that - and at the end of the day we found there was no place for him in the squad," Magiet said.

"He hasn't played for some time, he's had a knee operation, he hasn't had a fitness test recently, he has a very poor record in Australia, and there are other reasons." Cullinan has an average of 12 in his eight Test matches against Australia, and four in his four Tests in Australia.

Batting prospect Jacques Rudolph and allrounder Justin Ontong were the only uncapped players selected. Allrounder Justin Kemp, batsman Jonty Rhodes and fast bowler Charl Langeveldt will join the squad for the one-day series, replacing three members of the Test squad.

Squad Shaun Pollock (capt), Nicky Boje, Mark Boucher (wk), Boeta Dippenaar, Allan Donald, Steve Elworthy, Herschelle Gibbs, Mornantau Hayward, Jacques Kallis, Gary Kirsten, Lance Klusener, Neil McKenzie, Makhaya Ntini, Justin Ontong, Jacques Rudolph.
