Railways dominate Vidarbha at Nagpur
Staff Reporter - 12 November 2001

Vidarbha found itself completely outplayed in all departments by Railways in their Ranji Trophy league match at Nagpur after two days of play.

Winning the toss and opting to bat, Vidarbha could not muster up even a decent total. Barring three batsmen, nobody could even get into double digits; even among the three who succeeded moderately, the highest scorer, opener Amit Deshpande could only make 25.

The innings, thus, folded for only 108; Vidarbha, however, looked like making a fight of it when they picked the first three wickets of Railways for 29 and the first four for 67. At that point, S Raza Ali and skipper Abhay Sharma put on 144 runs for the fifth wicket, putting the opposition bowling to the sword.

Sharma finally fell at 211, but Raza Ali proceeded calmly towards his century, making it off only 140 balls. His was the ninth wicket to fall, with the score on 251; by then, he had made 133 off 208 balls, with 20 fours and a six, effectively taking the game away from Vidarbha.

Railways were finally bowled out for 284, a first-innings lead of 176 runs. They further consolidated their performance in Vidarbha's second innings, bowling accurately and restricting their rivals to 113/5 by the close of play on Day Two. Only Paresh Sutane showed any resistance, making 34 off 46 balls.
