One more semi-finalist needed for Gillette Cup

Only one more semi-finalist remains to be found for the Gillette Cup 2001 series to be played in Palmerston North on December 9-11.

Kelston Boys' High School and Whangarei Boys' High School will play the last match to decide the semi-finalists. The game will be played at the completion of Bursary and School Certificate exams at the end of the month.

The winner will join St Paul's Collegiate of Hamilton, Wellington College and Otago Boys' High School in the semi-finals which will be played in a round-robin contest at Fitzherbert Park in Palmerston North.

St Paul's won their place by beating Hamilton Boys' High School by 61 runs. St Paul's scored 182/8 with D Richardson scoring 59 and B Hurrell 43. G Steele took 3-24 and J Perrett 3-31 for HBHS.

In reply, HBHS were all out for 121 in 43 overs, S Uffindel taking 3-3 for St Paul's.

In the quarter-finals, HBHS then beat Francis Douglas Memorial College by 69 runs. Batting first, St Paul's scored 194/8 with Hurrell scoring 53 and S Williamson 39. D Bolstad took 3-38.

In reply, FDMC were all out for 125 in 40 overs. Richardson took 4-29 and P Carey 3-38.

Wellington College beat Palmerston North Boys' High School by six wickets in their match. PNBHS batted first and was all out for 140. L Beardmore scored 39 and C Clare 33. M Potter took 4-11 for Wellington College. In reply Wellington College lost only four wickets as B Horsley scored 63 not out and J Hill 33.

In the quarter-final match, Wellington College then beat Napier Boys' High School. NBHS scored 274/8 in their 50 overs and Wellington replied with 277/7 with J Ryder hitting 146, S Allan 51 not out, J Hill 46, L Crisp 43 and J Lamp 34.

Otago Boys' High School qualified for the quarter-finals by beating John McGlashan College by 136 runs. Batting first OBHS scored 203/9 with B McCormack 44, S Wells 31. M Nicholson took 4-29 for John McGlashan who were then dismissed for 67. M Harvie took 4-23, W Lawson 3-7 and S Murley 3-12.

In their next match OBHS met Burnside High School from Christchurch. OBHS scored 211/8 with A Collie 93 and F McLachlan 30.

Burnside were then bowled out for 122 in 49 overs. S Harding scored 43, P Coster 38 while S Brown took 4-2 and Collie 5-20.
