Matabeleland Report
Derrick Townshend - 17 November 2001

In the only national league match played in Bulawayo, Queens hosted Bulawayo Sports Club and recorded their first win of the season. Winning the toss, Queens sent BSC into bat and the visitors scored 232 with Keith Dabengwa, the recent CFX Academy player of the year, scoring 91, an innings of considerable promise.

In reply Queens reached 234 for six, with former Matabeleland batsman Neil van Rensburg narrowly missing out on a century with an attacking 98. The other matches scheduled were called off due to the wet fields after some heavy overnight rain.

The Matabeleland selectors have named the following teams to play at BAC on 17 and 18 November in a trial match which will enable the naming of the provincial squad for the Logan Cup early next year. The squad may be added to and players withdrawn at any stage, depending on performance, attitude and attendance at training and net sessions. Players not considered are Streak and Nkala, both with the national side in Bangladesh; last year's captain Mbangwa, who is playing in the Bowl game in Mutare; Henry Olonga, who is now resident and playing in Harare; and Under-19 member Charles Coventry, who is also playing in Harare prior to the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

Kings XI

R. King (captain), S. Brown, K. Dabengwa, W. Gilmour, T. Hove, R. Kasawaya, J. Hitz, M. Kenny, G. Strydom, N. van Rensburg, M. Townshend and 12th man T. Mupariwat.

Mahachis XI

C. Mahachi (captain), I. Engelbrecht, G. Ewing, B. Jacobs, M. McKillop, A. Naik, R. Rixon-Fuller, W. Siziba, S. Walker, C. Williams, G. Wren and 12th man A. Mukondiwani.

As with the previous year's policy on selection, the younger players are being given an opportunity to get the feel of playing the longer version of the game and this season will follow that trend where possible.
