National Academy off to winning start

The ECB National Academy have played their first match since arriving in Australia and got off to a winning start. In a one-day fixture against Tasmania 2nd XI in Adelaide, the Academy won by an impressive 73 runs.

Batting first, the Academy reached 294 for 7 in their 50 overs, with England one-day player Owais Shah top scoring. The Middlesex man made 74, while Durham's Nicky Peng reached 50, Ian Bell from Warwickshire made 55 and Hampshire's Derek Kenway was still there at the end on 36 not out.

The Tasmanians were then bowled out for 221 in the 45th over of their reply. Mark Wagh was the most successful bowler, his off-breaks giving him figures of 3 for 42, while Bell managed 3 for 26 and Chris Schofield, the leg-spinner who has already played Test cricket for England, returned 2 for 46.

The National Academy squad's next match is a 1-day fixture against the South Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide to be played on November 28th.
