Options shrink as West Indies tour confirmed
Wisden CricInfo staff - October 18, 2001

West Indies tour of Sri Lanka will go ahead as planned, according to Cricinfo. There had been much furtive whispering about the tour, because of fears over player safety following the events of September 11 and the American attacks on Afghanistan. The tour will take place during Sri Lanka's parliamentary elections, and police have expressed additional concern that they will not be able to provide full security for the teams during that time. The dates of the Tests may still be rearranged and Wes Hall, the president of the WICB, will talk to players on Monday about their security.

Two tours of the sub-continent have already been called off -- New Zealand and Sri Lanka pulled out of trips to Pakistan. England are also having cold feet over their tour of India.

If West Indies' tour does go ahead, it will scupper one of England's alternative options. West Indies are due to play three Tests, at Galle, Colombo and Kandy, which finish on December 4. This would not give England much time to slip in some games in the Caribbean before Christmas.
