After coming so close to victory in their previous match, England were well and truly put in their place by a magnificent display of fast bowling from McGrath and Gillespie, returned from an ankle injury and playing his first game of the tournament. Given attacking Test- match fields and expertly utilising the damp atmosphere throughout nine-over spells, they reduced England to 40 for five as they chased a revised target of 212 from 44 overs. When rain ended Australia's innings two overs early, the target would have been 220 in 48 overs. England's humiliating 86 all out was their lowest one-day score. Earlier they had celebrated Gough's equalling of Ian Botham's England record of 145 one-day international wickets, when he ended Waugh's determined innings of 64. That achievement, however, was quickly eclipsed by Australia's stirring response, and another defeat for England's increasingly dispirited squad.
