A first for Fernando
Wisden CricInfo staff - October 26, 2001

Buddika Fernando took a wicket with his first legitimate delivery in international cricket - but it was preceded by two no-balls. Eight bowlers have previously taken a wicket with their very first ball in one-dayers: Geoff Arnold, Clive Lloyd, Shahid Mahboob, Shane Thomson, Everton Matambanadzo, Sadagoppan Ramesh, Wavell Hinds and Josephat Ababu. Fernando later became only the fourth bowler to take five wickets on ODI debut, emulating Tony Dodemaide (5-21), Shaul Karnain (5-26) and Allan Donald (5-29).

Sean Ervine took his first wicket for Zimbabwe when he had Marvan Atapattu caught by Craig Wishart and took his second, Romesh Kaluwitharana, three balls later. He is playing in his third match, but managed only 0 for 81 off 14 overs in two games against England.
