In an amazing start to their Patron's Trophy match at Lahore, Habib Bank were bundled out for 27 by Pakistan International Airlines. Wasim Akram took 3 for 14, but the main damage was done by his new-ball partner Fazl-e-Akbar, who grabbed 7 for 13, including the last four wickets with consecutive balls.

Fazl, who is still only 20, made his Test debut as a 17-year-old in South Africa in 1997-98, but has played only three more Tests since. He missed selection for the 2000 tour of England, but was called up for the one-day international at Headingley, where he swung the ball well but went wicketless at one end while Waqar Younis blew England away with a seven-wicket burst of his own.

The only other Pakistani to take four wickets in four balls in a first-class match was Ali Gauhar, for Karachi v United Bank at Peshawar in 1994-95.

Habib Bank's total equalled the second-lowest in Pakistan's history, by Dera Ismail Khan against Pakistan Railways in Lahore in 1964-65. But DIK were a scratch team playing their maiden first-class match: Habib Bank have been the national champions, and their side for this match against PIA – a repeat of the 1999-2000 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final – included nine Test players.

The only lower score in Pakistan came in 1998-99, when National Bank were bowled out for 20 by Customs in Karachi. The only boundary then was four leg-byes – which instantly made extras the highest contributor in that innings.

When they batted PIA passed 50 before losing a wicket, and had reached 222 for 7 when bad light brought an early close on the first evening of the four-day game.
