Fletcher backs 'upbeat' Kirtley
Wisden CricInfo staff - October 5, 2001

HARARE (Reuters)
England coach Duncan Fletcher has fully endorsed the bowling action of beleaguered Sussex seamer James Kirtley.

Kirtley was told that his action was going to be under scrutiny by ICC match referee Colonel Naushad Ali after the first one-day international against Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

"I have no qualms about playing James," Fletcher told a news conference on Friday. "I'm not concerned about the scrutiny he'll be under. We'll talk to James and really it will be 11 guys going onto the field and giving 100%.

"He bowled very well in nets this morning and I haven't seen anything wrong in his attitude and he still seems pretty upbeat which is good. His action is fine as far as I'm concerned, it's has been passed by the English Cricket Board and if we want him to play tomorrow he'll go ahead and play.

"I'll tell him to just go out there and bowl and forget about this - what's the point? He is going out to play with the full backing of the side."

England, who won the first match of the series against Zimbabwe by five wickets, named an unchanged squad of 12 for the second game at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday.

England XII Nick Knight, Marcus Trescothick, Nasser Hussain (capt), Mark Ramprakash, Graham Thorpe, Ben Hollioake, Andrew Flintoff, Jeremy Snape, James Foster (wkt), James Kirtley, Matthew Hoggard, Paul Grayson.
