Dawn Sri Lanka accepts invitation but gives no dates
3 October 2001

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) Tuesday accepted Pakistan Cricket Board's invitation for a short tour "in principle" but gave no dates for the visit.

According to a report on BCCSL's official website, the BCCSL received an official invitation for a three-match one-day series from Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore Monday.

"Anura Tennekoon (BCCSL chief executive) has now contacted the Sri Lankan High Commission in Pakistan for advice. If they believe it would be safe for the players then the tour will be officially confirmed," the report quoted unidentified interim committee member as saying. But a PCB official claimed he had no information regarding BCCSL decision. He maintained that the status remained the same. He, however, hoped that BCCSL might inform them of their decision Wednesday.

"The board have looked favourably upon the invitation after the similar assistance was afforded to us in 1996 by players from Pakistan and India," the BCCSl official told the website.

Sri Lanka has been reportedly invited for a brief tour after New Zealand returned from Singapore on Sept 13 following terrorist attacks on the United States.

Sri Lanka last toured Pakistan in February-March last year and swept the three-match one-day series. They also won the Test series 2-1.
