Selectors keep faith in Tigers' late bloomers
John Polack - 8 October 2001

Tasmania's selectors have kept faith in the two line-ups that delivered the state late success in 2000-01 in the naming of the ING Cup and Pura Cup squads that will travel to Sydney this week to tackle New South Wales.

Only minimal alterations have been made to the Tigers' limited-overs and first-class teams from the end of last summer as the island state seeks to build on the momentum that carried it into third place in the Pura Cup and took it into the closing weekend of the one-day season with genuine claims on a spot in the Final.

Ricky Ponting and Jamie Cox head the list of talent in the batting line-up. For the ING Cup clash against the Blues at Bankstown on Sunday, that part of the team will also benefit from the inclusion of Michael DiVenuto and Graeme Cunningham along with all-rounders Shane Watson, Daniel Marsh, Shaun Young, Scott Kremerskothen and Adam Polkinghorne.

Damien Wright, meanwhile, will lead a well-balanced attack that includes former Victorians David Saker and Josh Marquet as well as the brace of all-rounders.

The side will be missing one of its regular members from last season, though. Impressive young right arm paceman Brett Geeves is on the casualty list with osteitis pubis and not expected back until the middle part of the season.

For the Pura Cup match that begins at the SCG the following Wednesday, opening batsman Dene Hills and left arm fast bowler Andrew Downton will replace Cunningham and Marquet in the 13-man party.

Interstate recruits Michael Dighton and Matthew Pascoe have been left out of each of the squads.

The full Tasmanian teams are:
