Whortleberry Pie
Somerset CCC Newsletter - 1 October 2001

The story behind the pie!

In 1938 Somerset all-rounder Harold Gimblett collected some berries from the Quantock Hills on his way to play the Australians. As the Aussies were staying at the Castle Hotel he took the berries to the Chef and he put them in a pie.

Don Bradman apparently gave it his seal of approval and ever since, whenever the Aussies come to Taunton, their reward from the Castle Hotel is to be presented with a Whortleberry pie.
