Schools cricket report
Tristan Holme - 12 October 2001

Peterhouse and Falcon made the most of Falcon's long journey by playing on both Saturday and Sunday, the teams ending with one win apiece.

The game on Saturday was a declaration game and was won by Peterhouse. The home team batted first and reached what seemed merely a reasonable total of 228 for five before declaring. The main run-scorers were D. Cloete with 68, and A. Durham and R. Kitcat, both with 62.

Peterhouse's score turned out to be more than adequate, though, as Falcon collapsed to 96 all out, with A. Durham taking three wickets for 9 runs and G. Freeland taking four wickets for 36 runs. The end result was that Peterhouse won by 132 runs.

However, the game on Sunday was a complete turnaround for Falcon who batted first in a 50-over match and reached a very decent total of 254 for six. In reply, Peterhouse only managed to reach 229 all out, meaning that Falcon won the game by 25 runs. G. Freeland top-scored with 59 and C. Travers made 52.

The inconsistency in batting shown by Falcon this last weekend is typical of most Zimbabwean schools, and one can see this mirrored in the national side. Perhaps this inconsistency is something which coaches should be taking up with the many up-and-coming young players in Zimbabwe before it turns into a long-term problem for Zimbabwean cricket.
