Redbacks' injury woes take another turn for the worse
John Polack - 15 October 2001

South Australia's injury woes have taken another turn for the worse today with confirmation that left arm pace bowler Brett Swain will be out of action for at least the next month.

Swain, who crashed heavily to the ground while fielding a ball during Friday's ING Cup match against Western Australia in Perth, visited an Adelaide specialist today to assess the extent of damage he sustained in the incident. It has already been confirmed that he has fractured his left clavicle, meaning that he is likely to miss at least the next five matches for the Redbacks.

Swain's brush with injury adds to a trend that has already forced Paul Wilson, Chris Davies and Mick Miller out of the team for extended periods.

Of that trio, Davies is the most likely to return first. Following a serious shoulder injury, the talented right handed batsman was poised to resume in grade cricket last weekend but rain in Adelaide prevented him from appearing.

Wilson, meanwhile, will be missing from the state side until at least late November after experiencing problems with loose cartilage behind his right knee.

And a damaged right shoulder has not only laid waste to Miller's hopes of starting the season strongly but also appears to be ruling out most chances of a return before the New Year.

Just to compound the problems, the revelation that Greg Blewett is suffering from stress fractures in his back has been confirmed. Although that is not expected to compromise either his batting or fielding, it means that his talents as a medium pace bowler will not be on show, at best, until late in the season.

In better news for the Redbacks, hard-hitting batsman Darren Dempsey has been included in the 12-man squad named for this week's Pura Cup match against Victoria at the Adelaide Oval.

The reigning Ryder Medallist has been in sparkling form since crossing from Melbourne in the off-season, sandwiching an ACB Cup century against the Academy in the midst of a number of impressive early season performances. He has yet to play at first-class level.

The full squad is: Darren Lehmann (c), Greg Blewett (v/c), Shane Deitz, Darren Dempsey, David Fitzgerald, Jason Gillespie, Mark Harrity, Ben Higgins, Graham Manou, Paul Rofe, Jeff Vaughan, Brad Young.
