Cronje loses appeal against life ban
CricInfo - 17 October 2001

Hansie Cronje's appeal against a life ban from the sport was today turned down by Pretoria High Court, although he may now have limited opportunities to pursue a career in coaching and the media. It is now up to the United Cricket Board of South Africa whether it allows Cronje to coach in schools within its jurisdiction.

The former South Africa captain had argued that his suspension should be lifted because the United Cricket Board did not give him a fair hearing before punishing him, and that the ban prevented him from earning a living. Following today's ruling, Cronje is still prevented from playing the game again.

Cronje was banned by the UCB following his admissions in April and June last year that he had been involved with Indian bookmakers during his captaincy for a number of years and that he had offered team-mates Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Williams money to underperform in a One-Day International in India.

As a result of these admissions, Gibbs and Williams served six-month bans from international cricket.
