Rain delays relegation deciders
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 14, 2001

Essex v Yorkshire
Glamorgan v Surrey
Lancashire v Kent
Somerset v Northamptonshire

Glamorgan 258, Surrey 572 for 3 Cardiff
Points so far Glamorgan 3, Surrey 8
Who needs what Glamorgan, already relegated, are fighting only for pride. Surrey collected the four points they needed to be safe from the drop early on the third day.
Story of the day Rain has delayed the start of the match on the final morning. With nothing left for either team to play for in terms of relegation, the only question will be how many more runs Mark Butcher (215*) can amass in a season he will remember for many years.

Northamptonshire 469 for 9 and 89 for 1, Somerset 650 Taunton
Points so far Northants 7, Somerset 8
Who needs what Northants, lying seventh, need to win and hope Lancashire don't beat Kent if they are to avoid relegation. Somerset have already secured the five points they needed to be sure of staying second.
Story of the day After a frustrating day on Friday, when the Somerset order batted comfortably on a placid pitch, Northants will need something truly amazing today if they are to avoid the drop. Rain at Old Trafford may turn events in their favour, but they still need an unlikely-looking win here to make themselves safe.

Kent 377, Lancashire 21 for 1 Old Trafford
Points so far Kent 4, Lancs 3
Who needs what Lancashire, sixth, need to win to stay up but will still do so as long as Northants don't beat Somerset. Kent are certain to finish third.
Story of the day. Rain is frustrating Lancashire in their attempt to preserve their Division One status. An inspection is due at 1.10pm. Red Rose supporters will have one eye on the skies, and the other on events at Taunton where a victory for Somerset over Northants will guarantee Lancashire's safety.

Essex 250 and 48 for 3, Yorkshire 105 for 5 dec Scarborough
Points so far Essex 3, Yorkshire 3
Who needs what Essex, demoted and demoralised, just want the season to end. Yorkshire have already won the Championship.
Story of the day A declaration from David Byas on Friday has at least injected some interest into a game that can benefit neither side. Essex lead by 194 runs with seven second-innings wickets intact. Can they finish their miserable season with a morale-boosting win?
