James Ormond's withdrawal from the one-day squad in Zimbabwe has presented England's selectors with the chance to right a major wrong by naming Martin Bicknell as his replacement. Bicknell has been inexplicably overlooked in the winter tour parties. He took 72 wickets for Surrey in the county championship this season, at an average of 21.36, more than any other bowler in Division One. With a batting average of nearly 47, he could certainly contribute down the order – something England desperately need from their frontline bowlers. If figures are to count for anything, Bicknell should already be dusting off his passport.

He has the added advantage of a proven fitness record and, at a time when young England seamers break down with depressing regularity, that is a priceless commodity. Perhaps his age is the sticking point. But at 32 he is a year younger than Andy Caddick and not much older than Darren Gough, who turns 31 on Tuesday. England have, quite rightly, taken a gamble on some young players for the winter but the bowling attack is one of the most inexperienced for years.

Bicknell would let no-one down, his line and length could be relied upon, and he would provide some important runs at No. 8. He is in the form of his life, and is a far better bowler than when he last played Test cricket in 1993. England could do a lot worse.
