• Vasbert Drakes (Warwicks) 209 runs at 20.90, 42 wickets at 36.59
• Daryll Cullinan (Kent) 122 runs at 40.66
In a year when most overseas players earnt their money, a modest contribution from Drakes stood out.

True allrounders?
England-qualified players who averaged more with bat than ball (regular bowlers only)

• Martin Bicknell (Surrey) 748 runs at 46.75, 72 wickets at 21.36; difference 25.39
• Robin Martin-Jenkins (Sussex) 524 at 47.63, 24 at 31.83; difference 15.80
• Richard Johnson (Somerset) 379 at 31.58, 62 wickets at 23.77; difference 7.81
• Tony Penberthy (Northants) 942 at 40.95, 25 at 40.76; difference 0.21
• Mark Ealham (Kent) 299 runs at 23.00, 25 wickets at 22.96; difference 0.04
The only one of these to play for England was Ealham, in a couple of one-day internationals, although Johnson was included in the Test squad without playing.

• Mark Butcher (Surrey and England) 1300 runs at 56.52

Amongst these Butcher was the only man to play for England, though Key has been included in the first Academy party.

English spinners past, present and future (no qualification)

• Phil Tufnell (Middx and England, 35) 60 wickets at 28.68

• Jeremy Snape (Gloucs, 28) 8 wickets at 50.75
• Peter Such (Essex, 37) 24 wickets at 56.58
• Paul Grayson (Essex, 30) 9 wickets at 66.88
Croft, Giles and Tufnell each played one Test, Dawson has been included in the Test party to tour India and New Zealand and Grayson and Snape are in the one-day squad to go to Zimbabwe.

Overseas spinners
• Mushtaq Ahmed (Pakistan) 14 wickets at 12.57

• Muttiah Muralitharan (Lancashire) 50 wickets at 19.42
• Saqlain Mushtaq (Surrey and Pakistan) 62 wickets at 20.74
It can't just have been the pitches, for all four overseas spinners had significant success, though tellingly none are orthodox finger-spinners.

• Jimmy Ormond (Leics and England) 59.40

Aside from the statistical freak that is Chris Adams (10 wickets at 11.10; strike rate 24.20) Kirby's was the highest strike rate amongst English bowlers.
