Floodlights loom at Lord's
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 28, 2001

LONDON (Reuters)
Floodlights may be introduced at Lord's to enable the home of world cricket to stage day-night one-day matches and help make up lost time after rain or bad light.

A statement on the Marylebone Cricket Club's official website says that members' approval to increase subscriptions by 50% – which was gained at a special meeting last night – would allow the owners of Lord's to go ahead with three key projects.

A feasibility study will examine installing floodlighting (possibly retractable lights to reduce the impact on local residents), the entire outfield will be replaced by a fast-draining topsoil/turf system, and "drop-in" pitches will be introduced.

Drop-in pitches, pioneered in Australia and New Zealand, are prepared in one place and transported to another. One was used at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the first time in a Test last December.
