Harmer expresses confidence in new squad
George Dobell - 11 September 2001

John Harmer, coach to the England Women's team, has expressed his confidence in the squad to tour India.

"This is a well balanced, competent squad which I expect to be competitive in India.

"We know we have a lot of hard work to do between now and the tour, and I'm looking forward to getting started."

Former England vice-captain, Barbara Daniels, writing for BBC Online welcomed the surprise recall of 36-year-old Sue Metcalfe, and pointed out that Jane Cassar would need to produce her best form if she is to retain her wicketkeeping position.

"At 36, she bucks the fashionable mantra of youth at all costs and will undoubtedly add much needed experience and steel to the side.

"While she may not survive through to the next World Cup in 2005, Metcalfe could do a good job for England in the next couple of years, allowing youngsters to develop and grow in confidence.

"Her tough and uncompromising approach on the pitch is well known and she has dazzled with the gloves for both North Riding and Yorkshire.

"A feisty competitor, she will undoubtedly push Jane Cassar for her place. Cassar should take that competition seriously and make sure that she responds by demonstrating just what a good keeper she is."

Daniels also applauded the recall of Laura Newton, describing her as "a phenomenally talented cricketer.

"This is a brave selection as Newton's second child, Harry, was born only two months ago.

"It is a big ask for Newton to return to full form and fitness before the tour to India and her inclusion at this stage may be more about bringing her back into the fold for next season."

The call-ups of Helen Wardlaw of Yorkshire and Sarah Clarke of Surrey were welcomed by Daniels. "An off-spinner and leg-spinner respectively, they demonstrate that Harmer is looking for people who turn the ball and stand every chance of progressing," she reasoned.

Charlotte Edwards, England's highly-rated opening bat who has missed the entire season due to injury, will train with the squad and travel to India if deemed fit.
