The Bell Tolls with Matthew Bell

NZ A shows mettle to get vital win
Matthew Bell - 12 September 2001

Since we had arrived in Hyderabad it has been a very frustrating time for all those involved on the tour.

And at the captain's meeting we joked about what could possibly go wrong to prevent us playing our next game. We thought we might get through like Central Districts did in the Shell Cup last year by only having to play and win a couple of games to get through to the finals.

As it happened it bucketed down with rain early in the morning. And as they had only one cover for the pitch the bowlers' run-ups for the bowlers were a huge concern. We waited around for half the day until it dried out enough to play a 28-over match. This was hard enough to instigate as they the umpires and opposition weren't that interested in playing.

Lou Vincent produced another fine innings which saw us make 183 in our 28 overs. The opposition, Chemplast, never really threatened as Chris Drum and Kyle Mills bowled beautifully in tandem to restrict them for 43/4 after 12 overs early on.

That night we changed our quiz night to a charades night which went very well. Again we broke up into our four groups and had four categories to contest.

They were TV, Movies, Books and Songs. We had a lot of fun and it actually got quite close at the end with the Paddy China Dolls needing to get the last topic in less than one minute. The topic was a song and it was "Hey Jude".

Paul Wiseman did the title and started off with a sounds like 'Gay' which turned into Hey and they were off to a great start.

From this position you would have thought Jacob Oram and Mark Richardson (Brooke Walker was absent as he was sick) would have named the song.

But Paul had to continue with another sounds like which they got as 'food'. So what sounds like food most likely Jude. But they still couldn't get it and went through an array of names with the funniest being "Hey Joseph".

By this time as we all knew it and they didn't. We were in fits of laughter. They finally got it just in time and won. But it was so funny at the time and I guess one of those moments were you needed to be there.
