Warwickshire promoted after crushing desperate Derbyshire
Nigel Gardner - 15 September 2001

Warwickshire were promoted to Division One of the championship when they polished off Derbyshire 10 minutes before lunch at Derby.

Only a last wicket stand between Tom Lungley and Lian Wharton held up Warwickshire but Melvyn Betts sealed a comprehensive victory when he bowled Lungley for a career best 47.

The end came just in time because a downpour hit the County Ground minutes after Lungley's leg stump was knocked out.

As Warwickshire celebrated, Derbyshire reflected on another defeat at the end of a desperate season in which they have finished at the bottom of the championship and the National League.

Only a 10th wicket partnership of 69 gave their second innings a measure of respectability after Dougie Brown and Charlie Dagnall had reduced them to 125-9.

Resuming on 91-5, Nathan Dumelow went in the sixth over of the morning when he was caught behind off Brown and Karl Krikken bagged a pair two overs later when he also edged Brown into the gloves of Michael Powell.

Kevin Dean speared Brown to point in the same over and when Graeme Welch was bowled by a swinging delivery from Dagnall, Warwickshire prepared to celebrate.

But Lungley and Wharton made them wait and after a five minute break for rain, they hung on for another 50 minutes.

Lungley played some impressive drives and the frustration mounted for the visitors when Betts put down Wharton at third slip.

But he made amends with his last ball of the next over and to add to Derbyshire's woes, they were also docked 0.75 of a point for a slow over rate.
